Tap & Line Dancing

p

Tap & Line Dancing - FULL

The group meets on the first and third Thursday of each month (2:00 until 4:00 pm) at Darton Parish Hall and is intended to cater for beginners only.

Full instructions are given by a member of the U3A who, although not a qualified dance teacher, possess adequate knowledge of both tap and line dancing to enable absolute beginners to get a taster of the subject.

The dances are taught at an easy pace, the steps being constantly repeated, with the result that everyone, irrespective of ability, is able to partake in the routines. Anyone new to the group should be able to pick up the steps, but a good sense of rhythm is essential.

The session is split into two halves i.e. Tap dancing, followed by line dancing, with a short interval. Dancing is an enjoyable form of physical exercise and having to memorize steps and routines is a good workout for the brain. Above all, it’s lots of fun!

When you consider that not one single member of this group had ever heard of a shuffle hop step, and had certainly never performed one, their progress is very rewarding .  They all admit that tap dancing is not as easy as it looks.  It’s a long journey from your brain to your feet and it’s during that journey that everything seems to go wrong!  However, with lots of good  humour and  staying power we have now got a repertoire of dances  involving quite a few different steps to music such as New York, New York;  Any Dream Will Do; and Me and My Shadow (including canes!), to mention just a few.

After tea break we have a Line Dancing session, where we are also building up quite a repertoire of different styles ranging from waltz to salsa.  It’s all good fun and fantastic exercise and I think everyone goes home tired but happy!

I apologise to anyone on the waiting list but the group remains full.  If there is any member who would be willing to set up an additional group, even just for Line Dancing, I would be prepared to help with music etc.
