Walking Groups

Walking (Wednesday Group)FULL

The Group meets twice monthly on Wednesday mornings for a walk of approximately 4 or 5 miles lasting a couple of hours or so and generally finishing at a local pub for lunch.

Each walk is chosen by the coordinator or a member of the group who researches and walks the route in advance so that the remainder of the group may be aware of the historical, environmental, and other matters of interest during the walk.

Evening walks have proved popular in the summer months.

Wednesday Wanderers

The second Wednesday walking group follows the same format as the group above - but is not full.

Walking (Thursday Group)

We meet on the first and third Thursday of each month, usually at 10.00.

The walk leader will have walked the route in advance, noting any historical or environmental matters of interest. Walks are of approximately 5.5 miles, sometimes finishing in time for a pub lunch.

During summer months longer walks of up to 8 miles are arranged, for which a packed lunch will be necessary. The detailed programme is contained in the Newsletter.

We are always looking for new walk leaders, and exploring new walks in the surrounding area. You are welcome to come along and take a walk with us before deciding whether to join the group. Walking boots and a kagoule (or other wet-weather gear) form part of our essential equipment.

Longer Walks (Thursday Group)

The walks will be all day, 8 to 12 miles long and normally be outside those areas covered by other walking groups. They will often be around one hour’s travel from Barnsley, therefore we hope to car share from suitable free car parks in our local area. Any new member interested should contact the Co-ordinator to obtain latest information.

Bus Pass Walkers

This new group will operate on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month and does moderate walks of around 4 miles along well defined footpaths, disused railways and canals etc over level countryside with the occasional slope and easy stile.

Most of the walks are point to point using public transport.

We will usually meet at the Barnsley Interchange and use public transport to the start of the walk.

We then do the walk and finish where we can use a different bus route to return to Barnsley.

There will be a short “banana stop” during the walk and walkers will need to have suitable footwear and rainwear.
